Steven Shulman, Operating Executive, Business Services & Restaurants
Mr. Shulman began his career as an associate at Burnham & Company from 1967 to 1969. Thereafter, he became a senior vice president of corporate development at Wheelabrator-Frye, Inc. and its successor company, The Signal Companies, Inc. from 1970 to 1984. In that capacity, Mr. Shulman was involved in numerous mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructurings including refinancings and spin-offs for the company.
Since 1984, Mr. Shulman has been active as a private investor and board member for numerous companies including: Ermanco, a material handling company, where he was the largest shareholder and director from 1984 until the company was sold to Paragon Technologies, Inc., in 2000; Marie Callender's Pie Shops, Inc., where he led an investor group in the acquisition of the company in 1989 which was subsequently sold in 1999 and served as the company's chairman and CEO; Terrace Food Group, the largest producer and dairy supplier in south Florida which was purchased in 1996 and sold to SYSCO in 2006. Mr. Shulman was chairman and CEO of the company. Mr. Shulman was also an investor and director of Beacon Partners, Inc., a commercial real estate group until its sale to Equity Office Properties in 2004; and Cyterra the largest manufacturer of land mine detection equipment where he was an investor and director of the company until its sale to L3 Communications in 2006.
Currently, Mr. Shulman is an active investor and/or director in a number of companies including: GeNO LLC, a medical device startup company; Universal Aerospace, manufacturer of airplane parts where he is an investor; Ark Restaurants a public restaurant holding company with units in Las Vegas, New York, Washington DC, Boston, Florida where he has been an investor and director since 2004; New Coal Holdings, which owns and operates a strip coal mine in western Ohio where Mr. Shulman is a major shareholder and director; NBE, a post secondary school specializing in training healthcare students where he is an investor and director of Aura Systems, Inc. a manufacturer of mobile power generating equipment where Mr. Shulman is an investor.
Mr. Shulman earned a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Science Degree and an Honorary Doctorate from Stevens Institute of Technology and is currently vice chairman of the board of Stevens Institute of Technology and has served as a trustee for 18 years.
